Michael Cox reviews a 'constantly engaging and frequently thrilling' production.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is an ambitious production. Produced by the National Theatre and based on Neil Gaiman’s novel, it’s a coming-of-age tale that pits two teenagers against dark supernatural forces while dealing with personal and family insecurities.
It would be surprising if the Duffer Brothers were not influenced by Gaiman’s novel when creating Stranger Things as it has many similar echoes. Set in the English countryside, the story centres on a Boy (Keir Ogilvy) who discovers the world can be a cruel place. He befriends Lettie (Millie Hikasa), whose family seem to have knowledge of unexplained phenomena in the local woods. When Lettie and the Boy mistakenly unlock dark powers, they’re thrown into an otherworldly adventure.
The story itself is highly enjoyable and delivers enough plot twists to keep one engaged, and the stagecraft involved is striking throughout: large puppets, flying and fire effects, impressive illusions and complicated stage design pepper the production throughout. However, it is the rich emotional journey that makes this production standout. The Boy and Lettie are two heroes that are easy to empathise with, even when they make mistakes that come with consequences.
The production, directed by Katy Rudd with a script adaptation by Joel Horwood, is constantly engaging and frequently thrilling. It might be telling a fantastical story, but by favouring emotion over spectacle it results in a far more engaging experience than the average blockbuster; by containing topics of memory, loss and sacrifice, it is also mature in its thematic explorations.
Due to the complicated plotting that should be allowed to keep its secrets, it’s difficult to say much more than that. As it has several moments of intensity, it might not be suitable for young audiences—the production has an age guidance of 12+ years, which feels accurate. However, those looking for a thrilling theatrical experience with genuine heart will be hard pressed to find a better production.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre until April 22nd 2023 before continuing its UK tour.
