Festival Review: Super Sexy Poetry Show ****

Michael Cox reviews a poetry performance 'with much worth listening to.'

Super Sexy Poetry Show is not just a catchy title but also a promise. The poster design further highlights the potential—we aren’t in for a stuffy hour of high-class tweed recitals of a romanticised world: we are in for something clever and self-aware.

And so, I am happy to report that RJ Hunter’s show more than keeps its promise—Super Sexy Poetry Show is an absolute treat from start to finish. Hunter makes for a welcome host—charming yet willing to put themselves on the line through personal observations and confessions: some hilarious, others heartbreaking. Each poem if filled with insight and humour—Hunter themself even more so. The delivery of each piece is excellent: clear and beautifully punctuated in rhythm and imagery.

To speak about what each poem expresses, and how the production at large is staged, would be cheating—it is a performance that should be experienced with fresh eyes and open hearts. But it is a journey more than worthy of taking, and Hunter not only proves to be an effective and witty wordsmith but one with much to say—and with much worth listening to.

Super Sexy Poetry Show is performing once more at the Scottish Storytelling Centre on August 19, 2024.
