Jo Turbitt reviews 'an intriguing and compelling piece' by Scottish Ballet.
In this Marvel Comic world-esque adaptation, Jessica Wright and Morgann Runacre-Temple (Jess and Morgs) present a 21st Century version of one of the pillars of classical ballet.
The choreography sits like a match made in heaven within the contemporary staging, allowing both concept and artistry to shine through. The soloists and artists of Scottish Ballet perform the vocabulary and characters with technical, musical precision; it’s evident that they’re playing as they go, using the atmospheres and nuances within the retelling of the story to explore the range of dynamics and performative qualities that they have at their fingertips.
Where this interpretation really packs a punch is in the blending of visuals: the use of video and animated staging to bring both intimacy and mystery to the ephemeral performance--as well as using sparks of reference to 21st Century social, cultural and habitual norms. As interpretations go, Jess and Morgs have expertly re-invigorated this classic story with all components coming together to present a physical graphic novel.
An intriguing and compelling piece - when it tours, go and see it!
